SMS Alerts at Competition
I think SMS alerts (text messages) have recently been successfully used as a communication
tool at many events ranging from outdoor concerts to large corporate conferences.
I think SMS alerts would be an effective, discrete way to keep participants informed
at a BajaSAE competition.
I think it would be beneficial (and cool) to be able to receive a text message (to
my cell phone), letting me know important announcements. These could be voluntary
(that is, each team could opt to subscribe up to two members), and might include:
- General Announcements ("Lunch is now ready at...")
- Event Messages ("No wait at Water Maneuverability...")
- Rule Clarifications ("Tires may NOT be changed if...")
and, if our realtime Endurance Scoring System is ready,
- Score Updates during the Endurance Race for your Car

I think people would be willing to provide (at sign-up) their mobile phone number,
designate their wireless carrier, and choose the alerts they want
to get either before or at competition.

During the race, I think most people would have their phones with them most
of the time, and would be able to hear / otherwise notice the SMS messages
when received.
